Encapsulation for Oil-Based Ingredients

The primary purpose of softgels is to encapsulate oils, offering a convenient and effective delivery method for oil-based nutrients and supplements. Softgels are especially suited for ingredients that benefit from an oil suspension, ensuring maximum absorption and bioavailability. Common fillers include:
Soybean Oil
Olive Oil
Coconut Oil
Flaxseed Oil
Hempseed Oil
These oils not only serve as carriers for the active ingredients but also enhance the overall stability and integrity of the softgel.
Powder Suspension in Softgels
While softgels are optimized for oils, they can also encapsulate powders by suspending them in oil. However, it’s important to note that softgels can hold significantly less powder than oil. Additionally, acidic powders are not recommended as they may compromise the softgel’s stability, potentially leading to leaks.
Common materials used for enteric coatings include:
Cellulose Acetate Phthalate (CAP)
Cellulose Acetate Trimellitate (CAT)
Polyvinyl Acetate Phthalate (PVAP)
Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose Phthalate (HPMCP)
Fatty acids, waxes, shellac, and plant-based fibers
Enhanced Absorption with Enteric Coating
For certain products, especially those with strong-tasting oils like fish oil, an enteric coating can be applied to the softgel. This specialized coating helps mask any aftertaste and enhances the product’s effectiveness by enabling it to pass through stomach acid and dissolve in the small intestine. This not only improves the taste experience but also increases the absorption rate of the active ingredients, allowing for better efficacy.
Cost of
Enteric Coating
Adding an enteric coating to softgels can range from $12–16 per 1,000 capsules, depending on the specific requirements and formulation. This investment provides substantial benefits, as it not only reduces unpleasant aftertaste but also optimizes the absorption of nutrients by ensuring they reach the small intestine.
